I tried to avoid this writing about this subject for various reasons, including the controversy surrounding it. I have my own opinions on the whole thing, which will be revealed during this post.

Recently, I was talking to someone about George Zimmerman and how he shot and killed an unarmed African-American teenager named Trevon Martin. This conversation really ticked me off, mostly due to one thing that the person I was talking to said. This is what they said that ticked me off:

It wasn’t murder. Trevon knocked George to the ground and continued to bash his head into the ground.

I heard this in recent days before this conversation, but the reason why it ticked me off during this specific conversation is because I simply don’t believe that story. I have followed this closely in the news, and it seems like the story coming out of Zimmerman (from the original police report), his lawyers, his friends, and his other supporters changes more often than a prostitute changes sexual partners.

One single witness supports this story, and I am not sure about the credibility of that witness. First off, if he witnessed it, why didn’t he come forward with this information before, when people first started getting outraged?

When it comes to the “Stand your ground” law in Florida, even if Trevon did approach Zimmerman, Zimmerman followed Trevon first. Zimmerman instigated the altercation. He didn’t stand his ground… he advanced, long before, even by his own (current) story Trevon approached him. Last I checked, advancing is NOT standing your ground. How can he claim self defense when he instigated the situation, and advanced on Trevon first? It does not make sense.

Then we get to Trevons school records, which never should have been released in the first place. School records, especially for minors, are confidential private information. It is against state (Florida), and I believe also federal, law to release this information without permission of Trevons parents.

Now we arrive at the 911 audio tapes. In my opinion, Zimmerman can clearly be heard saying the following on those tapes (and many people share my opinion here):

Fucking coons

Some people say they don’t hear it, and some people say they hear fucking punks. I don’t know what world those people live in, but in this world, punks sounds nothing like coons. If he did in fact say a racial slur, that makes this a federal hate crime case. I think he said it, but the FBI will know for sure. They are currently using audio enhancement technologies to clear the audio and hear better what he said.

Bottom line, in my opinion George Zimmerman is guilty of murder, and deserves to be thrown in prison for the rest of his miserable life.

**UPDATE 3/28/12 6:25 PM (MDT)** Just heard on CNN Radio on XM that even the original lead investigator recommended Zimmerman be charged with Manslaughter from almost the beginning, as he did not buy Zimmerman’s story. So, why wasn’t he charged?

**UPDATE 2 3/31/12 10:18 PM (MDT)** Finally heard the interview between Pierce Morgan and Zimmerman’s brother that took place the other day… all I have to say is that, in my opinion, Zimmerman’s brother is a moron who needs to grow a brain. With that being said, I also heard the debate between Touré and Morgan… Touré is also a freaking moron in my honest opinion. I thought Morgan did an awesome job during his interview of Zimmerman’s brother.

Please view the trailer for Bully, and read the post that is directly below the trailer:

Recently, the MPAA decided to give the documentary “Bully” an R rating… a decision made by one vote. Bully is a documentary that follows bullied kids in several states and attempts to bring attention to the issue.

Unfortunately, the MPAA’s decision to give this movie an R rating may cause this movie not to be seen by those that really need to see it… middle school, Jr. high school, and high school students.

In an even worse decision, the president/CEO of NATO (National Association of Theater Owners… not the other NATO) said to Bully’s distribution/production company that if they decide to go the route of releasing the movie unrated, they will treat the movie as if it has an NC-17 rating, even worse than an R rating. A very stupid decision on NATO’s part.

Middle school and high school students NEED to see this movie. With an R rating, there is no way it will ever be allowed to be screen in schools.

Recently, a young student from Ann Arbor, MI created an online petition to get the rating lowered to PG-13. I have signed this petition, along with (as of me writing this post) 155,000 other people. I ask anyone who has not all ready signed the petition to do so. You can view and sign the petition at http://www.change.org/petitions/mpaa-dont-let-the-bullies-win-give-bully-a-pg-13-instead-of-an-r-rating.

I have had a few friends who play the online MMORPG RuneScape asking me lately, why after years of playing and with a character level in the 120s (one of my many characters in game) I quit about a year ago. So, I thought I would write this entry on why I quit the game for everyone to read. Yes, I understand that many of you did not know I ever played that game. But the main subject of this article isn’t really RuneScape. It is Oracle and Java.

Java was originally invented or “created” by a company called Sun Microsystems as an internal project in 1990. Java was not actually deployed for use on the World Wide Web (now simply referred to these days as the Internet) until 1994. At the time, and up to about 2001 most Java applications were pretty simple. Many were online chat rooms. There were some simple games, and simple programs, but most that every day users encountered were not very advanced at all. Then, on January 4th 2001 the beta for RuneScape “Classic” (at the time simply referred to as RuneScape) was released, and was powered by Java.

I was one of the earliest players of RuneScape. I started playing within the first 1 to 2 months of the Beta. I can remember a time before the pay-to-play members version, and even a time before the wilderness. I remember when you could attack anyone within 3 levels lower than your level (if I remember correctly it was 3) and anyone of a higher level, just about anywhere in the game. Back then it was common to see a level 25 calling a level 11 a noob. Level 50 players were even rare at first.

That version of RuneScape had some very basic NPC and player model graphics, known as “sprites” or avatars in modern lingo that were 2D pixelated representations of the players or NPCs on screen. It also had some (very) basic 3d graphics when it came to certain buildings and landscapes. It seemed primitive. However, when one takes into account that it was powered by Java and utilized a fairly advanced leveling system, it was impressive nonetheless.

On March 17th 2004 Jagex, the creators of RuneScape released RuneScape 2 (now known simply as RuneScape). This was a major graphical and engine overhaul. The new engine, which was likely re-made from the ground up, now allowed for an (almost) full 3D game, still powered by Java. Even the avatars were now 3D. While the graphics couldn’t compare to a game like World of Warcraft, for Java it was still an impressive feat.

On July 14th 2008 the third version of RuneScape was released. This version, referred to as RuneScape HD was another graphical and engine overhaul of RuneScape. It was at this point that RuneScape started supporting DirectX, OpenGL and Hardware Acceleration. The textures and graphics became much more detailed, and a full screen version was introduced. While it still could not match the graphics of MMOs that were actually installed on the computer, again, impressive for a Java powered game.

Then, on January 27th 2010, disaster struck (in my opinion). Sun Microsystems, the creator of Java was bought out by one of Sun’s biggest competitors, Oracle. Java (and one of the best Database engines on the planet, MySQL) were now owned by a much more aggressive and anti-open source company (again, opinion). As soon as Oracle had the patents that were owned by Sun, they started getting sue happy on Open Source supporters, including Google (for its Android mobile OS).

Oracle was showing (to me) that it could not be trusted to care for Java (or MySQL, which is Open Source). Unfortunately, I am forced for the time being to use MySQL on my sites (as that is what WordPress is defaulted to and I don’t have time to figure out how to integrate PostgreSQL), however, I abandoned all applications that I used that were powered by Java and not absolutely necessary that I use.

I still use some Java powered applications at work, simply due to a lack of better solutions. I abandoned everything else Java based, including RuneScape. Every once and a while, I still use alternative Java Plugins not created by Oracle (such as IcedTea in Linux), but I will not touch (especially at home) the official Java. If I can help it, I avoid Oracle like the plague. To me, they are like the Lich King in World of Warcraft… the ultimate evil.

If anyone reading this has experience in using PostgreSQL with WordPress, let me know in the comments. I might have to pick your brains so I can get rid of MySQL as well. :)
